Critics Consensus

Distinguished by the ineffable star power of Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren, 1923 is another solid if unrelentingly grim addition to Taylor Sheridan's Yellowstone universe.

1923: Season 1 | Rotten Tomatoes (1) Nick Schager The Daily Beast Another capable notch in the writer/director’s belt, albeit one that’s too conservative—narratively speaking—for its own good. It hardly matters at this stage, the whole shebang is wonderfully cinematic and romantically entertaining. Taylor Sheridan’s writing is so taut it feels like the tension could snap at any moment, and Ben Richardson’s crisp and economic direction suits the weary, almost sullen mood. Joseph O Never quite soaring to the same epic heights as its narrative predecessor, "1923" never-the-less has some strong moments and its stars - in particular Dame Helen Mirren and Harrison Ford - give what could be considered (late) career best performaces. The biggest downfall of the show, for me, was that I became very invested in characters who, though they had compelling storylines, were often sidelined by more soapy subplots which felt like an unwelcome intrusion into what coud have been a worthy successor to the magnificent "1883." The show felt like it was struggling to recapture the success of its predecessor, while bowing to demands to make it mesh better with the soapiness of "Yellowstone" and while the show survived that struggle, it didn't do so easily. I will be returning to Season 2 when it airs, but I can only hope its standing on its own two feet in the next season. Rated 3.5/5 Stars • Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 09/16/24 Full Review Stephen F I am a true fan of the yellowstone series and the writing of Taylor Sheridan and thought 1883 was excellent However, 1923 for me falls flat. Helen Mirren is weak and her accent is appalling. As is Jerome Flynn. Harrison Ford does not have the presence he once had and I cannot understand the casting in this particular show. Just bringing in established actors will not make a show and for me its the worst of the yellowstone series. I watched only 2 episodes and that was enough. I Rated 2/5 Stars • Rated 2 out of 5 stars 08/23/24 Full Review Audience Member Really enjoyed 1923. Went into it without having seen the current Yellowstone series. The characters were very likeable and the wardrobe and sets transported me to another time 100 years from today. The writing and story craft is solid and I'm looking forward to a 2nd season. Rated 4/5 Stars • Rated 4 out of 5 stars 06/15/24 Full Review James H While I agree with others that the treatment of the boarding school clergy and the Irish is cartoonishly evil - Sheridan's flair for the dramatic always has its mustache twirling bad guys. He could dial it back a bit here though. The real stumble is how thin and stretched the story is. I really felt the length of the second half of the season even if I enjoyed the acting and some of the period details. This could be remedied with an impactful season 2. Fingers crossed. Rated 3.5/5 Stars • Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 04/25/24 Full Review Gary C After watching Yellowstone and 1883 I was a little dissapointed with this series. Despite the briliant cast it just didn't feel like the storyline was going anywhere. However, the performances of Harrison Ford, Helen Mirren and Timothy Dalton still make this series very watchable. Just feels like the series lacked a proper ending. Rated 3/5 Stars • Rated 3 out of 5 stars 04/02/24 Full Review Dan W The story moved slowly and I found myself fast forwarding through it. The dialogue was ok, but much of it was reminiscing about older times and marveling about how things were changing. None of this made the movie move along, though, so I found myself tuning out and hitting the FF button. Some of the scenes were good (lions and hyenas) and some were simply contrived, like the overturned boat saga. I am a huge fan of 1883, and I think that is one of the best depictions of the Oregon Trail ever done. However, 1923 is not anywhere near that level of writing. The season ended abruptly with no resolution (unless you count the killing of the nuns and priests - but even that story is unfinished). Wait until season 2 to be released maybe, before starting season 1. Rated 2.5/5 Stars • Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 03/18/24 Full Review Read all reviews
